Trout Fishing at Poolewe
Situated at the south end of the sea loch, Loch Ewe, Poolewe is a very attractive little village in a stunningly beautiful location, a short walk away from the world famous Inverewe Gardens, a rich oasis of exotic flora created amid the wild rugged, barren landscape of Wester Ross. Poolewe lies at the mouth of the River Ewe and is an excellent base from which the visiting trout fisherman can explore the variety of trout lochs in the area. Since the arrival of the salmon farm in Loch Ewe, the world renowned sea trout fishing on the River Ewe and Loch Maree has sadly declined dramatically, but the trout fishing in the many hills lochs of the area are well worth a cast or two, providing great sport in the remote hills of Wester Ross. Lochs include Loch Maree, Loch nan Eun, Loch an Draing, Loch Sguod, Loch an Iasgair, Loch Kernsary, Fionn Loch, Loch Bhaid Inachraich (the Goose Loch), Loch Fada, Loch Tollie, Loch Bhaid a Chreamh and many more.

The maps on this website, extracts from the “Half Inch” Bartholomew map series of the mid twentieth century, have been reproduced with the permission of Collins Bartholomew. Viewers should note that these maps date back several decades, to the mid twentieth century in fact. While much of the man-made details such as roads and buildings will have changed over the years, the character of the hills, lochs and rivers, and the trout inhabiting them, will have remained very much the same as they have always been, in the more remote regions at any rate! This website shows detailed maps of the major fishing locations. In addition, however, I would recommend that anglers planning a Scottish fishing or walking trip should be sure to equip themselves with a compass, the appropriate local Ordnance Survey map and a working knowledge of how to use them. The most useful of the O.S. maps for the fisherman is the Landranger series, scale 1:50,000. For Poolewe, see O.S. map number 19.
