Galloway Trout Fishing

Trout Fishing Lochs in Galloway

The hills around New Galloway offer a good variety of fishing, with many trout lochs, rivers and burns for the fly fisher to explore. These include Loch Ken, Catteringshaws Loch, Earlston Loch, Garsfad Loch, Loch Grennoch, Loch Skerrow, Stroan Loch, Woodhall Loch, Lochenbreack Loch, Loch Howie and many more shown on the map below. Most of them will be available to the visiting angler at reasonable cost. Newton Stewart Angling Club manages some of the lochs and also has fishing on the River Cree and Bladnoch. Coarse fish are also to be found in some of the lochs. The New Galloway Angling Association controls a stretch of the River Ken, a stretch of Loch Ken(West Bank) and also has fishing on Loch Stroan, at present the waters hold a selection of bream, dace, perch, pike, trout, salmon and ruff.

The maps on this website, extracts from the “Half Inch” Bartholomew map series of the mid twentieth century, have been reproduced with the permission of Collins BartholomewViewers should note that these maps date back several decades, to the mid twentieth century in fact. While much of the man-made details such as roads and buildings will have changed over the years, the character of the hills, lochs and rivers, and the trout inhabiting them, will have remained very much the same as they have always been, in the more remote regions at any rate! This website shows detailed maps of the major fishing locations. In addition, however, I would recommend that anglers planning a Scottish fishing or walking trip should be sure to equip themselves with a compass, the appropriate local Ordnance Survey map and a working knowledge of how to use them. The most useful of the O.S. maps for the fisherman is the Landranger series, scale 1:50,000. For Galloway, see O.S. map number 77 and 83.
