Trout Fishing Lochs of Assynt
Lying north of Ullapool in south western Sutherland, Assynt, with its very distinct mountains, including Quinag, Canisp, Suilven and Ben More Assynt, and hundreds of lochs and lochans, almost all holding wild trout of varying sizes, is one of the best and most affordable parts of Scotland for the trout fisherman. From Lochinver in the west to Inchnadamph in the east, Assynt offers a truly wonderful variety of fly fishing to the visiting angler in an area of outstanding scenery.
There are lochs to suit all tastes, from the large expanse of Loch Assynt itself to the many smaller lochs, more than one hundred and fifty of them, available on the Assynt Angling Group permit – including Loch Beannach, Loch an Loinne, Loch na Gainmhich, Gorm Loch Mor, Fionn Loch, Loch Feith an Lleothaid, Loch Gainimh, Loch Swordalain, Loch Awe, Cam Loch and Loch Veyatie, to name just a few of the trout lochs peppering the map below …. how is a fisherman to choose?

The maps on this website, extracts from the “Half Inch” Bartholomew map series of the mid twentieth century, have been reproduced with the permission of Collins Bartholomew. Viewers should note that these maps date back several decades, to the mid twentieth century in fact. While much of the man-made details such as roads and buildings will have changed over the years, the character of the hills, lochs and rivers, and the trout inhabiting them, will have remained very much the same as they have always been, in the more remote regions at any rate! This website shows detailed maps of the major fishing locations. In addition, however, I would recommend that anglers planning a Scottish fishing or walking trip should be sure to equip themselves with a compass, the appropriate local Ordnance Survey map and a working knowledge of how to use them. The most useful of the O.S. maps for the fisherman is the Landranger series, scale 1:50,000. For Assynt, see O.S. map number 15.
